New California 2-Hour Variable Life Insurance Training Requirement: What Agents Need to Know

What Is California’s New Variable Life Insurance Training Requirement?
As of January 1, 2025, California requires a 2-hour training course for agents selling variable life insurance policies. This course must be completed to remain compliant with state regulations.

In 2024, California passed Senate Bill 263, which requires life agents who sell variable insurance policies to complete 2 hours of training prior to each license renewal.

The rule applies to:

• All licenses issued or renewed after January 1, 2025. 
• Both resident and nonresident life agents selling variable policies to California residents.  

For resident licenses, completion of this course will count toward the licensee’s continuing education requirement
