Colorado Insurance Prelicensing Requirements
📅 Updated April 25, 2025🟠 ExamFX Provider #50801
Requirements Overview
Colorado requires producer licensing candidates to take and complete a state-approved prelicensing course. You will also need to apply for your license with the state insurance department and register for the state licensing exam. Make sure to register for all 3 (prelicensing course, license application, state exam) using the personally identifiable information exactly as it appears on your government-issued ID. Discrepancies will delay the licensing process.
Required Study Hours
| Line of Authority | Required Hours |
|---|---|
| Life | 50 hours |
| Accident and Health | 50 hours |
| Casualty | 50 hours |
| Property | 50 hours |

How to Complete Your ExamFX Prelicensing Education Course?
Colorado requires 50 hours of prelicensing education for each line of authority.
To earn your certificate of completion:
- Read every chapter and take the end-of-chapter quiz.
- Score 70% or better on each chapter quiz.
- Complete and pass the Certificate Exam with a score of 70% or better with a proctor/disinterested third party present. The Disinterested Third Party cannot be a minor, not related to the individual, and not an immediate supervisor or employee. The proctor must be physically present, supervise the exam duration, and follow all applicable state proctoring rules.
NOTE: You must complete your prelicensing course and receive a certificate of completion before taking the state examination.
IMPORTANT: Entering incorrect information may delay the issuance of the certificate of completion or, in the event of significant errors related to the identity of the registrant, any progress through the materials will be invalidated, and you must begin the course again.
How do I get my license?
Step 1: Complete a prelicensing course that has been approved by the Department of Insurance. Once you have completed your course and passed the Certificate Exam, ExamFX will review and process your Certificate of Completion.
Certificate processing takes up to 2 business days and may be delayed for proctor validation. Once approved, your Certificate of Completion will be available for you to download and print from your ExamFX account. The Certificate of Completion is valid for one (1) year. Your prelicensing course completion will be reported to the state by ExamFX.
Step 2: Schedule your exam with your state’s testing provider, Pearson VUE, or call (800) 274-2616. You must provide the training provider code (ExamFX training provider code is 50801) at the time of making your licensing examination reservation. Your exam may be taken at a physical Pearson VUE examination center or via a remote online proctored exam. Exam fees must be paid at the time of reservation.
All pre-licensing requirements must be satisfied before passing the Pearson VUE examination for the exam scores to be valid. Passing scores are valid for one (1) year from the examination date, and the license application must be received by Pearson VUE within one (1) year of passing the examination. To obtain your score report, log in to your Pearson VUE account.
Step 3: Take and pass your state licensing exam. On the day of your appointment, you must bring with you two valid forms of government-issued identification (driver’s license, passport, military ID, etc.), which must contain your name and photograph. You will not be able to take your exam if these requirements are not met.
After the exam, results will be available immediately.
Step 4: Apply for your license. Colorado resident applicants may use the online application service at NIPR or with Sircon. If you do not apply within 12 months of completing your education, you will need to retake it.
Step 5: Maintain your license by being aware of your continuing education requirements. Most insurance licenses must be maintained by completing a certain number of credit hours of continuing education each licensing period. ExamFX offers continuing education courses that will help you comply with your state’s requirements. Click here to view your state’s education rules and stay on top of your license.
