Connecticut Insurance Prelicensing Requirements
📅 Update April 25, 2025🟠 ExamFX Provider #20021
Requirements Overview
Connecticut requires producer licensing candidates to take and complete a state-approved prelicensing course. You will also need to apply for your license with the state insurance department and register for the state licensing exam. Make sure to register for all 3 (prelicensing course, license application, state exam) using the personally identifiable information exactly as it appears on your government-issued ID. Discrepancies will delay the licensing process.

How to Complete Your ExamFX Prelicensing Education Course?
Connecticut requires 20 hours of prelicensing education for each line of authority; and 40 for dual line of authority.
To earn your certificate of completion:
- Read every chapter and take the end-of-chapter quiz
- Score 70% or better on each chapter quiz
- Complete and pass the Certificate Exam with a minimum score of 70%
Your exam will be based on the Connecticut exam outline, which can be found in PearsonVUE's Candidate Handbook.
How do I get my license?
Step 1: Complete a prelicensing course that has been approved by the Department of Insurance. Once you have completed your course, ExamFX will issue a certificate of completion which you may download and print from your online ExamFX account.
Step 2: Schedule your exam online with your state’s testing provider, Pearson Vue. Your exam may be taken at a physical Pearson Vue examination center or via a remote online proctored exam.
IMPORTANT NOTE: When you register for ExamFX prelicensing courses, schedule your license exam, and/or apply for your license it is important to use the same name that appears on the identification forms you plan to present at the time of your testing appointment.
Step 3: Take and pass your state licensing exam. On the day of your appointment, you must bring with you two forms of current signature identification. The primary identification must be government-issued and photo-bearing with a signature, and the secondary identification must contain a valid signature. The name on the identification must exactly match the name on the registration. Identification must be in English (driver’s license, passport, military I.D., etc.) and must contain your photograph. You must also bring with you your certificate of completion. You will not be able to take your exam if these requirements are not met.
Candidates taking a remote proctored examination will be monitored by a Pearson VUE certified proctor via webcam and microphone throughout the test to ensure the integrity and security of the exam experience.
Candidates who pass all parts of the examination will receive a score report that reads “pass;” no numeric score will be reported. The score report will also include information on how to apply for your license. If testing at a Pearson VUE testing site, the score report will be provided at the test center. If testing online, candidates will need to log into their Pearson VUE account to obtain their score report.
Step 4: Apply for your license. Connecticut resident applicants must use the online application service at www.nipr.com.
Step 5: Maintain your license by being aware of your continuing education requirements. Most insurance licenses must be maintained by completing a certain number of credit hours of continuing education each licensing period. ExamFX offers CE courses that will help you comply with your state’s requirements.
