Indiana Insurance Prelicensing Requirements

📅 Updated April 25, 2025

🟠 ExamFX Provider #83532

Requirements Overview

Indiana requires producer licensing candidates to take and complete a state-approved prelicensing course. You will also need to apply for your license with the state insurance department and register for the state licensing exam. Make sure to register for all 3 (prelicensing course, license application, state exam) using the personally identifiable information exactly as it appears on your government-issued ID. Discrepancies will delay the licensing process.

Line of Authority Required Hours
Life 20 hours
Accident and Health 20 hours

How to Complete Your ExamFX Prelicensing Education Course?

Indiana requires 20 hours of prelicensing education for each line of authority, 40 for a dual line of authority.

To earn your certificate of completion:

  • Read every chapter
  • Take and pass the end-of-chapter quizzes
  • Complete and pass the Certificate Exam with a 70% or better

How do I get my license?

Step 1: Complete and pass a prelicensing course that has been approved by the Department of Insurance. Once you have completed and passed your course, ExamFX will review and process your Certificate of Completion. Certificate processing takes up to 2 business days, after which you may download and print from your online ExamFX account.

Step 2: Schedule your exam with your state’s testing provider, Pearson Vue, at least 24 hours in advance. First-time users are required to create an account online or may call (800) 274-2616. Your exam may be taken at a physical Pearson Vue examination center or via a remote online proctored exam. Your exam fee must be paid at the time of reservation.

Step 3: Take and pass your state licensing exam. On the day of your appointment, you must bring with you one valid form of government-issued identification (driver’s license, passport, military ID, etc.), which must contain your name and photograph. You must also bring your certificate of completion with you. You will not be able to take your exam if these requirements are not met.

After the exam, you will be provided with your official score report.

Step 4: Apply for your license. Indiana resident applicants may use the online application service at NIPR or SIRCON. Additional licensing application guidance may be accessed on the NIPR website. You will be required to retake your exam if you do not apply for your license within 6 months of passing your exam and completing your course.

Step 5: Maintain your license by being aware of your continuing education requirements. Most insurance licenses must be maintained by completing a certain number of credit hours of continuing education each licensing period. ExamFX offers continuing education courses that will help you comply with your state’s requirements. Click here to view your state’s education rules and stay on top of your license.

Your exam experience is dependent on the line of authority you are testing for, but all licensing exams will be multiple-choice and take place on a computer.  Review the exam summaries below. The exam content outlines can be found on the testing provider's website.
