New Mexico Insurance Prelicensing Information

📅 Updated April 25, 2025

Requirements Overview

New Mexico does not require licensing candidates to complete prelicensing education; however, ExamFX highly recommends that you complete an educational course before attempting to take your state’s licensing exam.

How do I get my license?

Step 1: (optional): Complete an optional prelicensing course that helps prepare you to take and pass your licensing exam.

Step 2: Schedule your exam with your state’s testing provider, PSI. The fastest way to schedule your exam is online at PSI or call (855) 560-3714. Internet registration is available 24 hours a day. Your exam may be taken at a physical PSI examination center or via a remote online proctored examination. Exam fees must be paid at the time of reservation.

To change or cancel your testing appointment, you must contact PSI at least 48 hours in advance or forfeit the examination fee.

Step 3: Take and pass your state licensing exam. On the day of your appointment, arrive at the test center 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment time to complete the necessary sign-in procedures. You must bring with you a valid (non-expired) form of identification (driver’s license, passport, military I.D., etc.) You will not be able to take your exam if this requirement is not met.

At the end of the exam, you will see a completion notice on the screen. A copy of your score report will be emailed to the email address you provided to PSI at the time of scheduling.

Step 4: After you have passed your insurance examination, apply for your license online via NIPR.  A fingerprinted background check is required and must be done BEFORE you submit your online application. You can find fingerprinting and licensing information here at the State of New Mexico homepage.

Step 5: Maintain your license by being aware of your continuing education requirements. Most insurance licenses must be maintained by completing a certain number of credit hours of CE each licensing period. ExamFX offers CE courses that will help you comply with your state’s requirements. Click here to view your state’s education rules and stay on top of your license.
