Tennessee Insurance Prelicensing Information

Tennessee does not require licensing candidates to complete prelicensing education, however, ExamFX highly recommends that you complete an educational course before attempting to take your state's licensing exam.
How do I get my license?
Step 1: (optional) Complete an optional prelicensing course that helps prepare you to take and pass your licensing exam.
Step 2: Schedule your exam with your state’s testing provider, Pearson VUE. The fastest way to schedule your exam is to do so online at Pearson Vue or call (800) 274-4957. Exam fees must be paid at the time of reservation.
To change of cancel your testing appointment, you must contact Pearson VUE at least 48 hours in advance or forfeit the examination fee.
IMPORTANT NOTE: When you register for ExamFX prelicensing courses, schedule your license exam, and/or apply for your license it is important to use the same name that appears on the identification forms you plan to present at the time of your testing appointment.
Step 3: Take and pass your state licensing exam. On the day of your appointment, you must bring with you two valid forms of government issued identification (driver’s license, passport, military I.D., etc.), one of which must contain your photograph. You will not be able to take your exam if these requirements are not met.
Once you have completed your examination you will be made aware of your results. Examination results may take up to three days to appear on the Tennessee Department of Insurance’s website.
Step 4: Tennessee resident producer applicants must be fingerprinted and then consent to having a criminal background check done along with their license application. Fingerprinting requirements should be met after the licensing exam is taken and passed. Candidates must contact IdentoGo at www.identogo.com. Enter the required information: Name, Agency (Department of Commerce and Insurance) and choose type:
TN Insurance Producer – ORI # TN920680Z (Transaction Type – IP)
TN Public Adjuster – ORI# TN920560Z
TN Navigator/CAC – ORI# TN920783Z
Apply for your license. Tennessee resident applicants must use the online application service at NIPR. Additional licensing application guidance may be accessed on the NIPR website.
Step 5: Maintain your license by being aware of your continuing education requirements. Most insurance licenses must be maintained by completing a certain number of credit hours of continuing education each licensing period.
