Required Hours

Producers in D.C. are required to take 24 hours of Continuing Education, including 3 hours of Ethics, every two-year license term. Licensees must renew on or before the last day of the licensee’s birth month every 2 years. No carry over credits are allowed and courses cannot be taken more than once in a reporting period.

NOTE: Be sure to complete all of your CE credit hours BEFORE submitting your license renewal application.

Category Restrictions

Students must take an approved course in the line of authority they hold. Producers who hold a combination P&C and L&H license must take a minimum of 6 hours in each line of authority. No more than 50% of the requirement can be in company-sponsored courses. No more than 3 hours of Ethics can be completed in a renewal period.

Special Training

β€’ FLOOD INSURANCE TRAINING – D.C. licensed producers who sell National Flood Insurance Policies are required to take a one-time 3-hour course on Flood Insurance.

β€’ ANNUITY BEST INTEREST TRAINING – 
D.C. licensed producers must complete a state approved 4-hour Annuity Suitability Best Interest course before selling, soliciting or negotiating any annuity products. The ExamFX Annuity Suitability Best Interest Standard course satisfies this requirement.

Course Presentation

β€’ CERTIFICATE EXAM – Licensees are required to pass the certificate exam with a 70% or better. Exams must be monitored by a qualified coworker (who cannot be a licensed agent) and who certifies that the licensee completed the exam without outside assistance.

β€’ STUDY BY TOPIC QUIZZES – 
ExamFX recommends that all Study by Topic Quizzes are passed with a 70% or better.

β€’ LICENSEE AND PROCTOR ATTESTATION – The licensee and proctor attestation must be completed following the certificate exam.

Certificates of Completion

Your certificate of completion will be processed within two (2) business days and can be downloaded/printed from the "View Certificate(s)" link in the course launch portal. Completions are normally reported to the state within two (2) business days of the certificate having been issued. The state charges $1.00 per credit hour in order to report completions. This fee will be charged prior to accessing the certificate exam.

Non-Resident Producers

Non-resident producers are not required to take CE if they have completed CE in their home state and remain in good standing.

CE Exemptions

The following are exempt from District of Columbia CE requirements:

β€’ Limited Lines Producers

β€’ Producers who have passed a recognized national insurance exam will receive 24 credit hours, fulfilling the CE requirement for the biennium in which they pass the exam.

License Renewal

Producers can renew their license at NIPR and follow the online renewal instructions.
